KLTV: Marjorie Nugent’s granddaughter: ‘Justice 1, Hollywood 0’ in Tiede sentencing

April 23,2016

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV) - Marjorie Nugent’s family says justice prevailed over Hollywood after a jury sent Bernie Tiede back to prison for life Friday night.

Tiede was booked into Rusk County Jail after the jury read their decision.

Tiede had been seeking a lighter sentence after being given life in prison in 1999 for killing 81-year-old Marjorie Nugent and putting her body in a freezer for nine months.

“When you really look at what the murder was, it was execution. You don’t execute people and you don’t execute 80-year-old people,” said Special Prosecutor Lisa Tanner.

After nearly five hours of jury deliberation, the Nugent family says they left the Rusk County courtroom victorious.

“Justice 1, Hollywood 0,” said Marjorie Nugent’s granddaughter, Shanna Nugent.

Marjorie Nugent’s son, Rodney, says when the family first heard about Bernie Tiede’s re-sentencing trial, they knew they had to take action.

“And said this is not right. We have got to stand up and be heard and get him back in jail,” Rodney Nugent said.

Nugent’s granddaughter, Shanna, said the family believed if the jury heard all the facts, justice would prevail.

“We don’t think that he’s going to be able to create another set of lies that people are going to believe. I don’t think the myth makers are going to put another multi-million dollar movie behind him,” Shanna Nugent said.

The defense team says their next step is a motion for a new trial and an appeal.

“He has the courage to get through this and we have the fortitude to help him through this as well, so this is just one moment in time,” said Defense Attorney, Jodi Cole.

A friend of Tiede’s, Eric Couch, says the man invested in people.

“He invested with his time, with his heart, his emotion. He built people he made them feel like somebody cared. He’s changed lives, and he’s changed so many for the better and he made one massively horrible decision that changed his life,” Couch said.

Shanna Nugent says many of those who knew Bernie were just victims of a con artist.

“When you try to fight a con man for that long, you understand their games, you understand their lies, you understand how they work,” Shanna Nugent said.

After years of ensuring justice was served for Marjorie Nugent,

“We’re just thankful that it’s over,” said Nugent’s granddaughter, Susan Nugent Jenull.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released a statement on Tiede's verdict saying:

“Our office is on a mission to achieve justice for victims and families in Texas. Our prosecutors and staff work tirelessly for the people of Texas, and we thank the jury for their service and diligent work in ensuring a just verdict.”
